Cabin Design

With summer officially upon us, many will be heading to the cabin for Memorial Day. We thought we would share some classic, cozy cabins and headline some unique features they showcase.

Mismatched cabinet fronts

These give a collected look, and are reminiscent of the cabins of the yesteryear’s. Today, the cabinets only give the illusion of being collected and pieced together over time. Not looking to complete an entire kitchen remodel? A simple way to achieve this look is by introducing a vintage hutch or sideboard, which will give a similar feel.

Rock faced edge counter tops

This raw edge profile plays up the collected look of the mismatched cabinets giving the kitchen an earthy, rustic style.

Outdoor shower

What a luxury this is, who doesn’t love an outdoor shower. Outdoor showers have been gaining popularity in cabins and vacation homes. It is a unique and functional feature, whether coming in off of the boat or giving the kids a quick rinse after playing at the beach. Outdoor showers truly make life a bit easier.

Log sided exterior

Nothing says cabin more than a traditional log sided exterior. Log sided exteriors are very versatile, they can be original on a 1920’s charming cabin or be incorporated on a larger scale, new construction. While there are many siding options to choose from, these logs add charm and finish off the cabin design.

Have a safe and fun filled weekend!

Color Palettes Using Grey

Often overlooked and difficult to get exactly right, color palettes can be challenging for both interiors and exteriors.

Grey has become the new go to neutral, replacing warmer shades of beige and giving a fresh new look. Grey is a very powerful color, it can play the neutral card or a bold in your face color if chosen in a rich saturated shade. For a minimalist yet elegant look, layer a few shades of grey.

Here are a few popular color palettes using grey.

Blue and Grey

Lavender and Grey
Aubergine and Grey/Green

Outdoor Spaces

Most Minnesotans will agree, we have the most beautiful springs and summers. While we may only get a few months of this beautiful weather. We know how to take advantage of them in our outdoor spaces, whether lounging, dining or gardening these outdoor spaces are truly priceless. Think of these spaces as an extension of your interior living spaces and use them to their fullest for the next few months!

Lounging

Dining

Gardening

A few key things to incorporate into your outdoor spaces are:
  • Lighting- Don’t forget about lighting! These can be torches, string lights or even outdoor lamps.
  • Fireplace/ fire pit- Although the summer days can be warm, it’s nice to wind down around a fireplace on a cool summer evening.
  • Layout- A well designed layout is key for backyard entertaining. Don’t forget to bring the key elements of a social area outside. A well  planned outdoor living room or dining space can be a key to outdoor entertaining success.
What is your favorite outdoor space?

Featured Designer- Annie Tropple

The  Featured Designer for May is Annie Tropple of Home Design by Annie. Annie’s passion for design started as a kid, growing up she was always rearranging her bedroom and tearing pages out of home design magazines. Annie has had the pleasure of working for many notable firms in Minnesota and California but ultimately chose to start her own company in 2009.

Share your background
I have a bachelor of Science in Interior Design from the University of MN, Twin Cities. I started my career working at Marshal Field’s Interior Design Studio then William Beson Interior Design. I have lived and worked in La Jolla, CA at a high end kitchen and bath studio for almost 3 years and moved back to be closer to family. From there I got a job at Hendel Homes as a designer.  In 2009 I founded Home Design by Annie.  With a lot of hard work, some great clients, and a little luck, this year will mark my 4th year in business!

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why
This winter aside, I don’t think I would rather live anywhere but MN. My husband and I love traveling as much as we can but are very close to our families and friends here. It’s nice to have MN as a home base and get to explore other parts of the world when we can.

Describe your dream home in five words

What are your hobbies
Anything out on the lake, being outside, spending time with family and friends, and currently getting the nursery ready for our first baby!

Five things you can’t live without
Health, Family, Friends, Our dog Sophie, and My iPhone

What are your favorite local shops and restaurants
Shops: Gather, Patina, Homegoods (not local but new in Edina)

Restaurants: I love Sakana Sushi in Wayzata, First Course on Chicago Ave, and Jerry’s Foods for their excellent Doughnuts

Describe one of your favorite projects
I’ve truly enjoyed all the projects I’ve gotten to work on. It is hard to pick a favorite, but if I had to, it would be one I am working on now in Stillwater. The client has a totally open mind and has let me run with the design. I’ve been able to really be creative and have had a lot of fun with it! It is a remodel and we’re bringing the house from standard late 90’s country style to fresh, bright and modern.

Featured Project: Nestled in a new Prior Lake neighborhood, this home was custom built for a young, growing family. They wanted a feeling of warmth and welcome in the home. It was important to make selections that were kid, dog and party friendly. The homeowners wanted a traditional kitchen with custom touches such as the transom windows in the back splash, a custom built wine rack and custom cabinetry designed especially for their family and style.

Who is your favorite artist and/or furniture designer
I don’t really have a favorite. I like to many different artists and furniture designers for different reasons.

What is your favorite room in your home, why
I would say the family room because it’s open to the kitchen and that’s where our comfy sectional is. There are great views of the backyard and it’s really peaceful. It’s where we spend most of our time.

Fill in the blank, No room would be complete without________
Art/ Accessories. They really make or break a room

Do you have “go to” paint colors, if so which ones
I have two favorite whites, depending on the style/colors in the house. Benjamin Moore Acadia White AC-41 and Simply White OC-117
